Bayonne is passionate about rugby. Aviron Bayonnais Rugby Club is the pride of Bayonne, the capital of the Basque Country. It mirrors the unique spirit of Bayonne’s inhabitants: active and fun-loving.
The club’s Jean Dauger stadium is reputed among rugby enthusists for its great atmosphere so it’s no surprise that Bayonne was awarded the title of Best Crowd in France. The famous Peña Baiona anthem, Vino Griego, is sung the world over.
The club’s official mascot Pottoka named after the Pottok (small Basque pony) is undoubtedly the most famous in France. On match days the Basque Country swarms to the bars and taverns lining the River Nive where the lively party atmosphere goes on until the early hours.
Songs can be heard resounding from every corner of les Halles, shop windows are dressed for the occasion and with the whole town wearing the team colours, blue and white, the true harmony can be felt as the town and its people unite to support their team. The banks of the River Nive and the narrow streets of the town centre and Petit Bayonne all spontaneously transform into havens of good cheer and merriment in true rugby tradition.
