What is the Eusko ?

In the Basque Country, the Eusko is the complementary local currency. It’s been circulating in the region since 2013 in note form. Here, one Eusko = one Euro.
Since 2017, the Eusko has also been used in the form of online accounts linked to a payment card called the Euskokart.
Today, it’s been the most important local currency in Europe since 2018 !

The Eusko in a few numbers :

  • Europe's first local currency
  • 4000 individual user
  • 1300 professionals
  • 4 million eusko in circulation
  • 260 associations
  • 36 member municipalities, in addition to the Community of the Agglomeration of the Basque Country
  • 24 tourist offices in the Basque Country (Ainhoa, Arcangues, Ascain, Bayonne, Biarritz, Bidache, Bidart, Cambo-les-Bains, Ciboure, Espelette, Guéthary, Hasparren, Hendaye, La Bastide Clairence, Mauléon-Licharre, Saint-Etienne-de-Baigorri, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Saint-Palais, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, Sare, Tardets, Urrugne, Urt)
  • More than 180000 Euskos distributed to 70 local associations thanks to the 3% Eusko programme.

Why use it ?

Vacances en Eusko

Using Eusko during your holiday means taking part during your stay in the ecological transition and balanced regional development of the Basque Country, because 1 euro spent in Eusko is 1 euro that will remain in the region and feed into the local economy, while developing short circuits, which is good for the environment.

Businesses that receive a payment in Eusko can convert it into euros, but a commission is then charged. As a result, more than 84% of network professionals never convert it and continue to work with network companies, always in Eusko. The choice of suppliers is therefore oriented towards member companies, and that’s how we re-localise the economy.
As you’ll appreciate, you’re the first stakeholders in this arrangement because it’s thanks to your efforts that the system is up and running - without you, the Eusko couldn’t circulate.
